| What is a Podcast? |
Podcasting describes the technology used to push audio content from a website down to a consumer's audio player that supports the .mp3 format. Consumers using an audio player (such as any MP3 player or the popular Apple iPod, hence "pod" in the name) can listen to this audio content at their convenience. While not directly associated with Apple's iPod device or iTunes music service, Apple did contribute the desire and the technology for this capability. Much like TiVo that allows the recording and storing of video for later viewing, Podcasting is used for audio and is currently free of charge. |

| How does Podcasting work? |
Podcasting uses an XML-based technology called RSS, or Really Simple Syndication. Content publishers describe new content in an XML RSS file which includes dates, titles, descriptions, and links to MP3 files. This auto-generated file is called an RSS feed - the key to making Podcasting work. |

| What is the history of Podcasting? |
| In October 2000, the concept of using enclosures in RSS Feeds was proposed in a draft by Tristan Louis and implemented in a somewhat different form by Dave Winer, a software developer and an author of the RSS format. Winer had discussed the concept, also in October 2000, with former MTV VJ, Adam Curry, a user of his software, and had received other customer requests for audioblogging features. Winer included the new functionality in RSS 0.92 by defining a new element called "enclosure", which would simply pass the address of a media file to the RSS aggregator. |
